What is Las Chulas?
Las Chulas is a collective of women from many lands on Planet Earth.
Las Chulas is group of women artists and activists devoted to bringing Joy and light into the world, through music, dance, the arts, action, healing, devotion, and our related projects.
Las Chulas is a music group providing the soundtrack to the revolution.
Las Chulas is a Mexico City slang term meaning a group of flashy sort of girlfriends; foxy sistahs; cool chicks; the mysterious, wise and wild women of the world.
Las Chulas began in 1999 when Gwyn Peterdi, Laura Castillo, and Miriama Broady started singing about chocolate together in a parking lot at a New England music festival. Even though there was great music being performed onstage, their harmony and vocal improvisations were so captivating that a large crowd gathered to listen. A young listener, certain they were singing of important world matters (they were! Chocolate, and perhaps he didn't understand as the impromptu lyrics were in Spanish) commented about the power of their collective voices. Soon after, Las Chulas were born and became a regular underground attraction at music festivals providing music, massage, information, and a positive vibration.
Now, in collaboration with Mama Miriama Band, Las Chulas are expanding their projects, membership and good works in service of Mother Earth and humankind.
